It is a well known fact in life that cheese improves any meal (sorry to all the lactose intolerant people out there). As a result, the recent influx in cheese related eateries in Edinburgh has made me a very happy cheesy bunny indeed. So here is a rundown of the best places to indulge in cheese in Edinburgh… (yes I am aware of the vast cheese repetition in those 2 sentences. Cheese!)

Best cheese in Edinburgh

Meltmongers

Quite possibly my new favourite place in Edinburgh is this new grilled cheese cafe/take-out haven in Bruntsfield. I visited for the first time this week with two of my cheese-loving colleagues. We ordered a range of sandwiches and sat in the shop window, overlooking the beautiful Bruntsfield Links. Although their focus is on grilled cheese sandwiches, they also offer a variety of other bites such as burgers, sweet potato fries and even sweet melts including a combination of Nutella, banana and marshmallow.

When my sandwich arrived it was everything I dreamed it would be – oozing with melty cheese deliciousness. I also got a side of cheese sauce and personally I believe that anywhere that offers a shot of cheese sauce as a side is an absolute winner.

You can check out their menu on their Facebook page here.

After my first visit I was raving to my other half about it so we took a drive up there on Saturday (3 days after my first visit) so he could experience it for himself. He opted for a burger version which you can see in the photo below. Personally I wasn’t too sure about this as it might dilute the cheese a bit too much but it was delicious. I went for something a bit different too; brie and caramalised onion – yum, yum, yum! Obviously a pot of cheese sauce on the side was by now a necessity, combining with the brie to make the ultimate cheese sandwich.

Bread Meats Bread

I couldn’t end this cheese fest without mentioning another new grilled cheese joint. We visited Bread Meats Bread in Glasgow when we were through for the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and we loved it. I was delighted as it offered more than just burgers – I had a pulled beef sub smothered in gravy. Recently they opened a new shop in Edinburgh on Lothian Road, just around the corner from my work. But wait, where’s the cheese connection? Well it turns out they now have a grilled cheese section on their menu! You can see the pastrami-filled grilled cheese sandwich that I had below. You’ll also notice the epic bacon fries behind it that were also smothered in cheese sauce.

If the sound of this place floats your boat then take a look at their menu here.

Other sources of cheese in Edinburgh:

  • I.J.Mellis cheesemonger – they have a few shops in Edinburgh and across Scotland. These guys are the proper cheese experts!
  • The Black Fox on Leith Walk serves a mean cheese board at a really reasonable price.
  • The Last Word Saloon in Stockbridge offer proper old school cheese toasties which are perfect after you’ve sunk a few of their sublime cocktails.
  • Pickles on Broughton Street serve some of the most epic cheese boards I have ever witnessed. Basically this place is all about the dream team that is cheese and wine.
  • Smith & Gertrude in Stockbridge. Another cheese and wine hangout but I’ve yet to visit this one so I’ll update you all soon.

So there we have it, if you like cheese then Edinburgh has fast turned into the place to be. Hopefully I haven’t missed anywhere but if I have, let me know in the comments below and I’ll add it.

Now I’m off to eat a whole wheel of cheese…
