I started buying frozen fruit to use in my smoothies but one day I decided to add a handful of frozen blueberries to my daily porridge. I’ve eaten this breakfast every morning for years – made with skimmed milk, cooked in the microwave and with a spoonful of honey to finish. What a winning decision adding frozen fruit to the mix was! It makes your already very healthy porridge taste so much better, as well as giving you one of your 5-a-day. (more…)

Recipe: Olives marinated in ginger, cinnamon and cardamom

Second in my mini series of recipes (see olives marinated in chillies and oregano here) after my recent Olive it! cookery class experience, is a recipe for olives marinated in ginger, cinnamon and cardamom. Sound like a funny combination? I thought so too but they are delicious, so trust me on this one!

You’ll need:

  • 1 jar or tin of ‘turning colour’ or black olives
  • 100ml of mild olive oil
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 kaffir lime leaves
  • 2cm of ginger


  1. Drain the olives from the brine and place them in a bowl.
  2. Peel and thinly slice the ginger, crush the cardamom pods, cinnamon stick and the kaffir lime leaves, before mixing it all in with the olives and olive oil.
  3. Leave to stand for 20 minutes then enjoy the freshly marinated olives or keep in the fridge for up to a month in a tightly sealed container.

Recipe: Olives marinated in oregano and chillies

Following on from my recent Olive it! cookery class I’m going to be sharing a mini series of the recipes we made (and ate) so you can give them a go yourselves!

As you’ll know from my previous recipes on my blog, I’m a huge fan of easy instructions with few ingredients but that produce delicious results. This is no exception. To make you olives marinated in oregano and chillies…

You’ll need:

  • 1 jar or tin of green olives
  • 100ml of mild olive oil
  • 6 sprigs of fresh oregano
  • 6 dried cayenne peppers


  • Drain the olives from the brine and place them in a bowl.
  • Between your hands, rub the sprigs of oregano so they release their natural aromas, before sprinkling the sprigs over the olives in the bowl with the crushed chillies.
  • Drizzle over the olive oil and then turn everything together to mix.
  • Leave to stand for 20 minutes then enjoy the freshly marinated olives!

Your freshly marinated olives can be kept in the fridge for up to a month in a tightly sealed container.

Olives are the Marmite of the fruit world (yes, they are a fruit!), you either love them or hate them. I used to hate them and now I love them. I’ve spoken to many, many people about this and they all say the same thing, “I just kept eating them until I liked them. It was probably after the seventh time of eating them!” Over the past few years I have been trying to convince my (stubborn) other half of this, so when I was invited to an Olive it! cookery masterclass in Edinburgh, he was the prefect candidate for my plus one.

Before we begin the three-course olive based feast, I thought I’d start with some outstanding olive facts:

  • As I said above, they are a fruit!
  • Olives are healthy – approx. 37 calories for a whopping 7 olives
  • Good source of vitamin E
  • Black olives are also a good source of iron
  • Virtually cholesterol free!

So if you didn’t fancy making yourself love olives before, maybe you should!

Pinterest thumbprint butter biscuits

I looooove fawning over tasty looking foodie recipes on Pinterest, but I never imagine they’d turn out like that if I tried to make them myself. One particular photo that caught my eye was of some jam filled biscuits/cookies so I decided to give them a go! And correct me if I’m wrong but I think mine look pretty damn delicious…

These biscuits are SO melt-in-the-mouth buttery you can feel your heart clogging up as you eat them but you still want more! The recipe was really simple but if you have a food processor then that is definitely an advantage! (more…)
