Is social media making us antisocial?

I'm very social in my bedroom on my laptop and iPhone

Last night I watched a TV programme on BBC three called Websex: What’s the harm which was investigating ‘how the internet is changing the sex lives of 16-24 year-olds’, interviewing young people who rely on social networking sites, mobile technology and webcams.

One of the first young people to be interviewed was a 19 year old male who had quite worrying speech, as in he sounded pretty stupid and his sentence structure was very poor. In addition, his views on using the internet to find girls were pretty shocking. (more…)

Are you a victim of social overshare?

We don't need to know EVERYTHING

Why do we use social media? To share knowledge and information with friends, family and acquaintances.  But is there a limit to how much we should share and what we share. Obviously some people do not think so! So how do we know what is the appropriate amount? Or am I contradicting myself as I have said many times that social media is largely about freedom of speech?

How much is too much? Well if you’re hungry, eating a whole cake is too much, but a slice may be very enjoyable and satisfying. So how does this translate online.

Overshare, aka “too much information” (TMI) is a familiar phenomenon in the world of social media. An offline example of this is “Did I ever tell you about how you were conceived?”, “Uh, no, mum, that would be an overshare.” as provided by Urban Dictionary. So what about online, what form does overshare acquire in the virtual world?

First Facebook, next your skin

Tomorrow is my birthday, so as I prepare to turn one year older I think I am entitled to an old lady moan. So what is the fuel for this rant? Incorrect grammar and spelling on social media (oh and by the way, I’m turning 25 and not 85 as it may sound).

So, are social media partly to blame for the increase of the incorrect use of ‘there’ instead of ‘they’re’ or ‘their’ and ‘to’ instead of ‘too’? Or are people just becoming lazy?

Here come the snowmen!

We are yet to have a proper snowfall in Edinburgh and are getting set for a bizarrely warm Christmas. However, when the snow finally does appear, I will be first out there making my snowman. Here are some for us all to aspire to…

First off, a little xmas kiss from a squirrel! The poor creature is going to be heartbroken when that melts! :(

Probably the best Christmas trees in the world!

Five days until Christmas, so let’s celebrate with some awesome Christmas trees. But first, here is how a Christmas tree should NOT look…

Wrong, wrong, wrong

So let’s look at how it should be done! First off a Lego xmas tree this year in London! Even the baubles were lego and had some QR code cubes hanging from the tree! (more…)

RIP email?

R.I.P e-mail

My thoughts today are about email and the continuous debate about its suggested demise due to social media.

Email is ubiquitous, but so is social media, isn’t it? We are becoming increasingly surrounded by Facebook ‘Like’ buttons and integration into many aspects of our lives, changing the way we view and share content online, and maybe even how we shop online in the near future. Email has to be one of the greatest inventions to date. Yes we moan when it goes down, but we are also happy when an email we shouldn’t have or wish we hadn’t sent either gets lost on its way or ends up in the recipient’s junk folder (phew). (more…)
