If you speak to anyone in Edinburgh about new foodie establishments at the moment, chances are you’ll hear about Dishoom.
There are already a handful of Dishoom restaurants in London (Shoreditch, King’s Cross, Carnaby and Covent Garden) that I’ve heard people are raving about. St. Andrew Square in Edinburgh has recently had a large scale makeover, with the introduction of new restaurants, hotels, a TK Maxx and more to come! This was clearly a prime location, central and close to Waverley Train Station, for Dishoom to branch out of the big smoke and open their first restaurant in Scotland.
Back in mid-January we were invited to their official launch party, a spectacular affair filled with luxurious nibbles, cocktails and chai – word quickly spread on the Edinburgh grapevine about the new eatery in town. The most frequent whispers I heard revolved around their Bombay cafe style brunch and, luckily, I was fortunate enough to receive an invite to pop along and review it for myself.
When you enter Dishoom you’re greeted by a very friendly face at the desk who will assist you with your booking or check if they have space for an impromptu visit. The ground floor is pretty much occupied entirely by the open kitchen area, so you’re surrounded by all the wonderful aromas of what awaits.
Up a huge flight of stairs lined with old framed photos (there is also a lift if you need it) is the restaurant area. Downstairs there’s a separate bar area, which is where we were for the launch party. This is also the location of the toilets, which is a fair trek from the restaurant, but staff up there do encourage you to get the lift down.
We were seated at a lovely table next to the window so we had a prime view of St Andrew Square. The decor is beautiful and authentic for the Bombay cafe theme, they really have spared no expense on each and every detail. The tables in particular look quite rustic with a variety of wooden and mosaic surfaces.
Our waiter was super friendly but in the most genuine, and not at all ‘try hard’, way. He was so helpful and attentive whilst also giving us our own space to enjoy our brunch.
We started with a couple of Chais while we absorbed the menu. We actually sampled the Chai at the launch party so I couldn’t wait to have one again. They’re perfectly spiced and give the most comforting hug inside as you drink it.
I’d heard lots about the breakfast naans so I knew this was what I was going to order – I just needed to decide on the filling. I opted for the sausage and egg and never looked back!

I also chose a breakfast lassi to get a boost of goodness into my system. Made with oats, yoghurt, banana and mango it was the perfect accompaniment. And as they say on their menu, help you ‘keep regular’!

My brunch date chose the Bombay omelette with a side of fried chicken livers. Not the most conventional brunch choice but it was right up his Strasse and he loved it.
